Often referred to as the “Paris of the East”, Budapest has all the ingredients for a perfect holiday destination. It is the place to visit if you are looking for mesmerizing islands, peppy nightlife, exotic spas, ethereal churches, magnificent scenery and historical information. Budapest boasts to be one of the most beautiful capitals and is the hub for education, politics, transportation, industrialization, culture, administration and business for Hungary.Millennium Underground Railway or Metro 1 (yellow line) is the ancient railway line of Budapest Metro. Built during the years 1894-1896 Metro 1 is also Budapest’s oldest one railway line and the second oldest railway line in the world; one of its kind in the European Union. In 2002 it was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.Budapest has three metro lines in the city. Originally the first metro line was put in for transportation to the Budapest City Park. Initially there was opposition to the plan of building any land transportation on Andr’ssy Avenue, but now Budapest can proudly call it one of its most up-market roads. The metro plan was presented to the national Assembly in 1890 and was allotted to Siemens and Halske AG, a German firm. They initiated the construction work on the metro line in 1894 and needed 2,000 workers and state-of-art technology and machinery to complete the vast project in the span of two years. They used the cut-and-cover method for building the metro that entailed constructing shallow tunnels, excavating a trench and finally adding the roof. The project went exactly as scheduled and was inaugurated as planned on May 2, 1986 by Emperor Franz Josef.This year was the “millennium year”; the 1,000 anniversary of the arrival of the Magyars. The Seashore Trolley Museum has preserved and displays one of the original cars.The metro route was from V”r’smarty Square to the City Park via Andr’ssy Avenue and the Zoo was its terminus that was later changed. The Metro 1 had 11 stations with 2 of them above ground and 9 under ground. Initially the line was 3.7 kilometers and stopped every 2 minutes. It can easily carry 35,000 people in one day. To date, 103,000 people travel on Metro 1 on any average working day. The other two metro lines are known as M2 (red line) and M3 (blue line). M2 (East-West line) was constructed during 1970 and underwent extensions in 1973. Its route is from Ors vezer tere to Deli Palyaudvar. M3 (North-South line) was constructed in 1977 and underwent various extensions in 1980, 1981, 1984 and 1990. Its route is from Kobanya Kispest to Ujpest-Kozpont. M4 line (Northeast-Southwest line) is still under construction and is expected to be completed in 2010.
